The 2017 US WANTED poster for the terrorist they now applaud for taking over Syria.
In 2017, the US government issued “wanted” posters offering a $10 million reward for information on terrorist Muhammed al-Jawlani, the leader of al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria al-Nusra Front. “Stop This Terrorist”, the poster screamed in red letters.
Seven years later, US President Joe Biden greeted the news that Jawlani’s forces had overrun Syria, saying in an 8 December statement that “rebel forces have forced [President] Assad to resign his office and flee the country. At long last, the Assad regime has fallen. … A fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice. It’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country.”
In truth, Syria has fallen, 13 years after the USA, UK, France, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Israel launched their regime-change operation under cover of the so-called Arab Spring in 2011. Under the onslaught of extremist jihadis backed by those countries, initially armed with weapons used to topple Qadaffi in Libya, Syria held out with the support of Iran and especially Russia after Putin intervened in 2015. But years of crushing sanctions took their toll on the country. For instance, the average soldier in Syria was only paid $7 per month, and the imperial machine behind the regime-change operation never rested, always looking for opportunity, even when the guns were silent. Bashar al-Assad also made some fundamental mistakes recently, according to leading Arabist Alistair Crooke, listening to the siren song of Saudi Arabia to reject advice from Russia and Iran and deal with the USA and Israel. Now that the imperialists have ousted him, they don’t care what the newly whitewashed terrorists led by Jawlani do to the Syrians, they’ve achieved their goal; in Israel’s case, that includes a huge extra chunk of Syrian territory.
In Doha, Qatar, also on 8 December, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov gave his analysis of what has happened in Syria:
“The biggest trend of the modern world”, Lavrov said, “[is] the fight against those who want to keep hegemony [the Anglo-American empire] and on the other hand those who would like to live in a free world where the United Nations’ demand to respect sovereign equality of states is really implemented. … So the fight of these two worlds, one phasing out and another one emerging, is not going without clashes, and the conflicts which were aggressive adventures which were launched by the US and its allies in Iraq, Libya, Palestine … invading Syria, all this is the repetition of the very old habit to create some havoc, some mess, and then to fish in the muddy waters.”
Lavrov warned: “The Middle East and Europe is not enough. Already NATO under the United States’ command pronounced last year at the summit that the security in the Euro Atlantic is indivisible from the security in the Indo Pacific region, so they already eye the entire Eurasian continent including South China Sea, Strait of Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, they are creating NATO-like military blocs… This is a reflection of attempts not to allow the hegemony to phase out, but this is a fight against history. So yes, we are very much sorry for the Syrian people who became a subject of another geopolitical experiment.”
Australian PM Anthony Albanese knows the truth about Syria. At a 2013 Hands Off Syria event in Sydney he praised Syria as a sophisticated secular state and attacked the proxy war against it: “It is absolutely important that Syria’s future be determined by those people in Syria, and not forces outside Syria.” Now outside forces have determined Syria’s future, but Albanese is silent, because Australia is subservient to the Anglo-American hegemon that is fighting against being phased out. It will keep flailing around attacking countries, unless new political leadership accepts the reality of a multipolar world. The best thing Australia can do is end our subservience to it and stand independently.
